Cat and Dog Door Installation in Glass in Dunedin
Glass and Window Repair Dunedin installs cat and dog doors into glass across the city. We cut the aperture, fit the pet door and reseal the panel so it stays weathertight. It works in sliders, back door panels, laundry windows and sidelights, and it leaves the joinery, the wall and the door itself untouched.
- Cut into the glass panel, not the frame or the wall
- Single glazed panels cut on site, toughened made to order
- Microchip and magnetic doors fitted

Four quick questions. Most quotes come back the same day.
Glass is the tidiest place for a pet door in a New Zealand home because it avoids cutting through a timber door or an exterior wall. The catch is that not every pane can be cut. Toughened glass shatters if you cut it after treatment, so a toughened panel has to be replaced with a new pane made with the hole already in it.
Toughened or not decides the job
Look for a small etched stamp in a corner of the pane. If it is there, the glass is toughened and it cannot be cut. A new pane is made to size with the hole already in it, which takes a few days and costs more.
Plain annealed glass, which is common in older laundry windows and back door panels, can be cut on site in one visit. We check before quoting so the price does not move.
Double glazed panels
A sealed unit cannot be cut without destroying the seal. The fix is a new unit manufactured with the aperture built in and the edge seal carried around it. It is a made to order item and worth doing properly, because a badly cut unit fogs within months.
Which door and where to put it
Microchip doors only open for your animal, which keeps the neighbourhood cats out of the kitchen. Magnetic collar doors are cheaper and work well enough for most.
Height matters more than people expect. Too low and the flap catches on the sill, too high and an older animal will not use it. We set it to the animal and not to the middle of the pane.
Getting a pet door right first time
Height, not centre
The flap should sit so the bottom is at or just below the animal's chest, not in the middle of the pane. Too low and it catches on the sill, too high and an older animal stops using it.
We set it to the animal rather than to the glass, which occasionally means an aperture that looks off centre and works perfectly.
What cannot be changed later
Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or enlarged after treatment, and a sealed unit cannot be cut at all without destroying the seal. Both mean a new pane made with the aperture already in it.
So the size, the position and the door model all have to be settled before the glass is ordered. Changing the model afterwards means starting again.

Cat and Dog Doors in Glass in Dunedin: common questions
Can you put a cat door in a double glazed window?
Not by cutting the existing unit. A new sealed unit is made with the aperture built in and the edge seal carried around it.
How do I know if my glass is toughened?
There is a small etched stamp in one corner. If it is there, the pane cannot be cut and a new one has to be made.
Can you fit a microchip pet door in glass?
Yes. Microchip and dual scan doors fit into a glass aperture the same way as a standard flap.
